Shortest Day
It was one of those winter days
Where the sky was leaden
But at the horizon,
Where the city blended into the hillsides
The striated orange tones
Hinted at the retreating sun.
It was the shortest day of the year
And, elsewhere, people were dancing rituals,
Beating drums,
Celebrating the solstice
As if it had meaning
Beyond the mechanics of the sky.
I wished there were a few more hours
Left to this day
So that the Western winds could clear the clouds
And allow the orange and red of dusk prevail
As visible proof that come tomorrow
There would be light instead of darkness.
But this is the cruelty of the sky
And of the clouds
And of the winds.
They conspire in the coldness of the shortest day
To promise only ambiguity
In the sullen reaches of the night.
Our simple solution to the fears that come in winter
When nature is not merciful to man:
We huddle in the shelter of our doorways
And make do with life the very best we can.
Flag
There is a flag that’s waving
On a tall staff
On a roof
Of a tall building in the city.
My window overlooks this flag
And the flag informs me of the weather
Each day I care to consult it
By its waving wind-blown dance.
It is red and white and blue
And its ends are tattered by the elements
But whoever owns the building
Lets it fly until it shreds.
Then one morning there will be
Upon the staff, unexpected,
A new banner up to challenge
The rain and wind and storms.
And sooner than you might think
It too succumbs to ripping
And rippling like a kite tail,
A depressing cloth at dawn.
If I only could find that landlord
In the City’s jungle
To urge him to better upkeep
Of the flag outside my window,
(To that landlord I would venture
A guess that fresh flags flying
Are simply a cost of living
To be controlled at bottom line)
I would explain how it’s depressing
To see the shards of fabric
Sap out whatever pleasure
I might muster from that flag.
I’d let that landlord sit here
At the desk inside my office,
And feel the deep discomfort
That the tatters add to gloom.
Of course this is just minor annoyance
Midst the crises of the night.
Don’t we have some bigger problems
At each morning’s early light?
